#TRISavesElephants, How and Why?

Did you know? Once common throughout Africa and Asia, elephant numbers were severely depleted during the 20th century, largely due to the massive ivory trade. While some populations are now stable and growing, poaching, conflict and habitat destruction continue to threaten the species. (WWF, 2019). And there are less than 3,000 Sumatran Elephants left in this world.  Having the elephants in the forest is important because the elephants feed on a variety of plants and deposit seeds wherever they go, contributing to a healthy forest ecosystem.

With #TRISavesElephants campaign, TRI Upcycle works together with Hutan Alam dan Lingkungan Aceh to supports Wildlife Protection Teams managed by the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL) in the most important forest areas across the Leuser Ecosystem. These teams consist of 4-5 highly trained and dedicated rangers. The rangers are our guardians on the ground, directly protecting the Leuser Ecosystem from encroachment, illegal logging and poaching.

The FKL also has a Conservation Response Unit (CRU) Serbajadi is located in Aceh Timur district, and functions as a hub to educate the public and assist when human-elephant conflict arises. The aim of the CRU is to minimise the impact of human-elephant conflict, which results in elephants being killed or maimed and also crop and settlement damage and even sometimes deaths in human communities. The CRU is managed by Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Aceh), and the Leuser Conservation Forum (HAkA’s partner on the ground) provides financial and technical support to maximise the capacity of the CRU. TRI’s kind donation will go towards FKL’s support for the CRU.
